D20 Magic Dice v0.8
The sound design in D20 Magic Dice is what grabbed me first, which is weird because it's a visual novel. But the dice roll. That clattering, tumbling, plastic on wood sound is so crisp it makes my spine tingle every time. They actually layered multiple takes so no two rolls sound identical, and the reverb changes based on the scene. In that endless white void at the start, the dice echoes like you're in an empty gymnasium. Later, in Rumi's apartment, it's a dry, close thud. I spent twenty minutes just clicking the roll button. The voice acting though. Makima's lines are mixed way too hot compared to everyone else. Her whispers clip the mic and not in a sexy ASMR way, more like someone eating chips directly into your eardrum. Widowmaker sounds like she recorded her parts in a bathroom, which I guess is on brand for a sniper but still. Ada Wong's moans have this weird phasing effect like they ran it through a flanger pedal from 1987. Why. The crossover premise is pure brainrot in the best way. You're at a party, then bam, cosmic dice entity, and suddenly you're trying to get with Tsunade while Nico Robin reads a book in the corner judging you. The Zelda scene caught me off guard because her theme music plays but it's slightly detuned, like a music box left in the rain. Creepy and hot simultaneously. The uncensored art does heavy lifting here. Big boobs everywhere, obviously, but the animators understood weight and bounce physics better than most games with ten times the budget. One thing that bugs me. The dice mechanic where your thoughts become reality. Cool concept, but the game forgets about it for long stretches. You'll be three scenes deep with Rumi Usagiyama and suddenly remember oh right, there's supposed to be a cosmic dice controlling fate or whatever. Then it pops back up like a jump scare. The Fate characters feel tacked on too. Saber is just there. Standing. Menacingly. No sound cue when she appears, just silent judgment. Missed opportunity for some sick sword unsheathing SFX.
