Pandorium: Small Business Rourke
Costello's stuff always has this weird, grimy texture to it, like you're scrolling through a forgotten flash site. Pandorium throws you into this alien pimp scenario, right? You're some dude named Daze, and the whole point is to manage these girls, get them hooked on pills, and pimp them out. The sex minigame is where it gets... interesting. It's not just a click and watch thing. You actually have to work for the payoff, matching rhythms or whatever, and if you mess up, the scene just kind of fizzles. It's frustratingly clunky, but that almost adds to the sleazy vibe. Like, of course pimping out a drugged up alien prostitute wouldn't be a smooth, polished experience. The art is pure Costello. Everyone looks a bit off, proportions are stretched in that specific way, and the whole thing has this unpolished, almost sketchy feel. It's not trying to be a triple-A porn game. It knows what it is. You get these girls addicted, watch their stats change, and then send them off to get gangbanged by weird alien creatures. The whole pill mechanic is dark, even for this kind of game. You're not just a manager, you're a dealer actively ruining them. I wish there was more variety in the johns, honestly. After the fifth tentacled thing, you start to recognize the same three sprites. The translation is a mess, which is part of the charm. Sentences just stop. Sometimes a dialogue box will pop up with what I assume is a raw code string. It's broken in a way that feels intentional, or at least, perfectly fitting. Forgot to mention the sound design. There basically isn't any, just a looping, tinny beat that drills into your skull. You'll mute it after ten minutes. But then you unmute it because the silence is worse. It's a game about degradation, and the whole experience, from the minigame to the broken UI, degrades you a little bit for playing it. Don't expect a happy ending for anyone involved.
