You know what I miss? Games that just let you be a complete bastard. Not a cartoon villain with a moustache, but that quiet guy in the back of the lecture hall who's taking mental notes on everyone's weak spots. Hearts in the Shadows gets that. You're Trevor, a psych student who's basically using the whole campus as his personal lab rats. The 3DCG is rough, like someone's first Blender project rough, but honestly that jank adds to the creepy voyeur vibe. You're peeping on broken people, classmates with daddy issues and eating disorders and that specific loneliness that makes you overshare at parties. And Trevor just... collects them. The sandbox stuff is mostly clicking around the same school corridors until you trigger scenes. It gets repetitive fast. I wish there was more to actually do with the manipulation mechanics, you know? Like, let me plant evidence or gaslight someone properly instead of just picking dialogue options that are obviously marked [MANIPULATE]. The incest content is there if you dig for it, some stepsister situation that feels tacked on because the dev knew what sells. Whatever, I'm not complaining about more degenerate options. The voyeurism bits are where it shines. Hiding in closets, peeking through keyholes, that sweaty thrill of watching someone cry alone in the library stacks and getting hard about it. There's this one scene where you observe a girl self-harming and the game just sits with that discomfort. Doesn't moralize. Doesn't cut away. You're the creep choosing to keep watching. That's the good shit. The writing sometimes tries too hard to sound deep, throws around psych terms like a freshman who just discovered Freud, but when it shuts up and lets the silences breathe, it actually lands. The translation is a mess too, lots of weird phrasing that accidentally makes everything sound more unsettling. I'd kill for a DLC that goes full blackmail simulator, maybe adds a stalking mechanic where you follow targets home. As is, it's a solid 6/10 that I've sunk way too many hours into.
